a youth rugby program focused on core values and the basics of rugby league
San Diego, CA – December 9, 2024
The San Diego Barracudas are proud to announce the launch of the Barrakiddos Youth Rugby League Program, an exciting new initiative designed to introduce kids aged 12 and under to the fundamentals of non-contact rugby league in a fun, safe, and inclusive environment.
Kicking off on Saturday, January 18th, the six-week program will meet weekly at Sycamore Ridge School and is open to boys and girls of all skill levels. Each session will run from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM, with coaching provided by qualified coaches alongside members of the San Diego Barracudas men’s and women’s sides, the city’s first-ever rugby league club, established in 2021.
more than a game: teaching cuda values
The Barrakiddos program is about more than just learning the game; it’s about building character and community. Each week, young players will focus on incorporating one of the six Cuda Values into their lives on and off the field:
Selflessness – Putting the team and others first.
Loyalty – Staying committed to teammates and the community.
Trust – Building and earning trust through actions.
Accountability – Taking responsibility for choices and actions.
Intensity – Approaching challenges with energy and determination.
Diversity – Embracing differences and creating an inclusive environment.
““These values are at the core of what the San Diego Barracudas stand for””
“These values are at the core of what the San Diego Barracudas stand for”, said Ben C Calverley, founder and president of the San Diego Barracudas. “We want to teach kids that rugby league is not just about the game but also about how we treat each other and grow as individuals.”
affordable fun and swag for every player
The program costs just $40, which covers six weeks of instruction, a Barrakiddos t-shirt, and a swag bag filled with kid-approved Barracudas gear.
coaching clinics for volunteers
The Barrakiddos program is powered by volunteers, including current players from the San Diego Barracudas. Coaching clinics will be held on Sunday, December 15th and Sunday, January 5th, at 11:00 AM at the SDSU Mission Valley River Park. These clinics will prepare coaches to work with youth and ensure a positive experience for everyone.
